What Should You Wear for Family Photos?
One of the biggest questions I receive before a family session is:
"What should we wear?"
The good news is that you don't need matching outfits or an entirely new wardrobe to create beautiful photographs.
The goal is simple: wear clothing that feels like you while allowing your family's connection to take center stage.
Choose Coordinating Colors, Not Matching Outfits
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, choose a color palette that complements one another.
Think soft earth tones, warm neutrals, muted greens, creams, dusty blues, or warm browns.
These colors photograph beautifully in Southeast Idaho's natural landscapes and create timeless images you'll love for years to come.
Keep It Comfortable
If you're constantly adjusting your outfit, it'll show in your photographs.
Choose clothing you can move, sit, cuddle, and play in comfortably.
Children especially photograph best when they can simply be themselves.
Avoid Busy Patterns
Small logos, bright neon colors, and busy patterns can distract from what matters most—your family's connection.
Simple textures and solid colors tend to photograph beautifully.
Don't Forget the Details
Take a few moments before your session to think about the little details.
Clean shoes, neutral nail polish (or freshly painted if that's your style), and removing phones or bulky items from pockets can make a surprising difference.
Most Importantly...
Don't stress about creating the "perfect" outfit.
Your children won't remember what color shirt you wore.
They'll remember laughing with you.
Years from now, those genuine moments will matter far more than perfectly coordinated clothing.
